We are delighted to announce the results achieved for our Rochford 2015 ‘Dan les Bois’ Pinot Noir in this year’s international 2016 Decanter World Wine Awards. Rated 95/100 – the judges notes were impressive: “Seductive, attractive and inviting with glorious, perfumed notes of spicy black pepper, warm spice, strawberry and truffle all laced with a steely, mineral thread. Polished and glossy on the palate, with vivid, vibrant fruit and silky smooth tannins braced by a lovely, clean acidity”.

"The fruit for this single vineyard Pinot Noir is grown at the Swallowfield Vineyard in Gembrook Yarra Valley. Named ‘Dans les Bois' or ‘In the Woods' - this wine celebrates the beautiful old-growth native forest at the far edge of the Gembrook vineyard which is in the southern most vineyard in the Yarra Valley. While Gembrook is known for its volcanic derived red soils, Swallowfield sits on a granite outcrop. It is these quartz rich which are perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Handpicked on March 12, the fruit was sorted, partly de-stemmed (50% whole bunch) with short cold soak, natural fermentation and pressed to French Oak (30% new). It then spent 10 months in oak, racked off lees just prior to bottling. This wine is unfined and unfiltered.

Rochford Wines owner Helmut Konecsny said of this result "To win this Gold medal in such a prestigious Wine Show is a great honour. We aim to make great wine and are thrilled to be recognised in this way".

Chief Winemaker Marc Lunt said of this wine, "This is a very exciting time for everyone here at Rochford and congratulations must also go to our Viticulturist John Evans and vineyard Consultant Peter Payton who both made a huge contribution to the making of this wine. 2015 will be remembered as one of the finest harvests ever seen in the Yarra Valley - above average yields, little disease pressure, excellent natural acidity and fruit flavours kept both winemakers and viticulturists happy".
