GOULBURN RIVER VALLEY HOME TO VICTORIA'S FAVOURITE FISHING SPOTS

The Goulburn River Valley's premier waterways are set to be busy this summer after being acknowledged by recreational fishers as the most popular freshwater fishing spots in Victoria.

In a recent survey by Department of Primary Industries, more than 40% of the 4,500 fishers surveyed revealed Lake Eildon and the Goulburn River as their favourite fishing spots in the state.

"It will come as no surprise to many fishers that Lake Eildon was voted the most popular lake for recreational fishing and the Goulburn River was the most popular river location," said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh.

"While some fishers keep their cards close to their chest when it comes to the exact location of their favourite fishing spot, the survey provides a general snapshot of some of the best places to fish in Victoria."

Goulburn River Valley Tourism Executive Officer Amanda McCulloch said, "Lake Eildon and the Goulburn River have long been popular locations for recreational fishing in our region - and now they have been revealed as the best in the state."

"We are expecting a busy summer in the region for fishing and no doubt our local businesses will benefit from the influx of fishers and families to the region."

The results of the survey will be used to direct future Recreational Fishing Initiative investment priorities, like fish stockings and access and amenity upgrades.

Through the Recreational Fishing Initiative Eildon is stocked with an additional 50,000 Murray cod fingerlings every year and is currently being stocked by Fisheries Victoria with one million extra Murray cod.

"Stockings such as this will ensure Victoria's best fishing spots remain that way," said Mr. Walsh.
