Blue Wren, Mudgee proudly announces its first Merlot release since 2002 - the Blue Wren No. 716 Merlot, 2016. With only a limited release of 5,000 bottles the Blue Wren No. 716 Merlot, 2016 is a very young wine with traces of blackberry, currents, as well as a big emphasis of cloves. It shows overall mouth flavours of currents, slight blueberry, vanilla, and wet quartz stone on a cold day.

Produced in one of New South Wales' premium wine regions - Mudgee - this delicate wine is dry and slightly crispy on the palate, with hints of woody notes and not to be confused with a touch of earthiness.

"We are very happy with the result. Mudgee's grape growing conditions are well suited to producing high quality fruit focused on red varieties such as the Merlot varietal," says Blue Wren owner Kip Harris.

At 13.5% alcohol, Blue Wren's Merlot is a bold and robust red that is young and will age graciously over the next decade.

"12 months from now the alcohol will start to subside to bring forward taste of winter herbs such as thyme, sage and all things good associated with red meats slowly cooked in an over or open fire" says Harris.

Known for its concentrated and flavoursome wine styles, Mudgee has had continuous history of winemaking with the first grapes grown in 1858 and reached a peak of 55 vineyards in 1893, now Mudgee is the third largest grape-producing region in NSW and has more than 110 wine grape growers and more than 30 cellar doors.

Located three-and-a-half hours' drive from Sydney, Mudgee's burgeoning wine region is situated on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, and has a very different climate to that of its neighbour on the coastal side, the Hunter Valley. Cold nights delay bud-burst and rainfall and humidity are lower, with greater sunshine hours. Nevertheless, Mudgee's altitude of around 450 meters shelters it from the heat.

The boutique winery boasts the only Chef's table dining experience in the Central West NSW wine region, located at the winery's recently refurbished intimate restaurant. Guests can dine as Head Chef and owner Kip Harris showcases first-hand, an innovative menu using only the finest produce matched with Blue Wren's latest wine releases, ranging from the new Verscato to their recent release of the Rosé and even a White Port to end the night.
