ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE MELBOURNE’S JUNIOR LORD MAYOR

Sienna Koop, 11 years of age from St Louis de Montfort’s School, Aspendale was announced as the 2017 Junior Lord Mayor of Melbourne earlier today at Council Chambers Melbourne Town Hall. The Junior Lord Mayor Competition is supported by Melbourne Day, the official day when we celebrate Melbourne’s founding anniversary on August 30.

The competition ran throughout June to August- where the chosen student becomes Junior Lord Mayor for 2017/2018. Six young Melburnians from across metropolitan Melbourne were chosen from hundreds of entries to be presented to the Melbourne Day Committee and associate judges, where each finalist was invited to answer a series of questions about past and present Melbourne and how they would celebrate Melbourne's Birthday.

Sienna was declared Junior Lord Mayor by judges - Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Arron Wood, Channel Nine News presenter Peter Hitchener, 3AW Presenter Denis Walter, Melbourne Day Chairman Campbell Walker, and Head of Client Services of 13CABS Simon Purssey.

Following the Junior Lord Mayor of Melbourne last year, Sienna will join Lord Mayor Robert Doyle to raise the city of Melbourne's Flag at Enterprize Park on Melbourne Day, Wednesday August 30, and engage in many important junior mayoral duties of being the "Little Big Boss" of Melbourne throughout the year.

Melbourne Day is committed to educating our younger Melburnians to learn about Melbourne's history, city landmarks and icons and giving them the opportunity to become involved in a number of free fun activities as Melbourne prepares to celebrate its 182nd birthday.

Over the past 20 years, the Melbourne Day committee have coordinated a number of entertaining activities and events- for all Melburnians- to raise awareness of Melbourne's history and celebrate its anniversary.
